Chinese Brown Sauce Chicken Recipes
- 1 1⁄2 cups chicken broth
- 4 -6 boneless chicken breasts (or boneless pork chops)
- 4 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 garlic cloves, minced (or 1/2 tsp. garlic powder)
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- hot cooked rice
- peas (stir fry veggies of your choice)
- Lightly brown chicken breasts in a small amount of oil.
- Remove from pan and add garlic, soy sauce, brown sugar and 1 cup chicken broth.
- Stir to mix and return chicken to pan and cover.
- Simmer for a few minutes until the chicken is done (15-20 minutes).
- Remove chicken again and add remaining broth, which has been mixed with cornstarch.
- Bring to a boil to thicken and return chicken to the pan, coating it well.
I love this recipe and could eat it at least once a week! I think it tastes very close to the brown sauce that is served in Chinese restaurants. I have made it with and without the veggies with great success.

Very, VERY good…but a bit salty for us. I subbed liquid aminos for 3/4 of the tamari (gluten free soy sauce). Made it PERFECT! Gave it an extra-gravyish-brown-sauce taste, like the Chinese places have. Also used fried tofu in lieu of chicken (vegan). Hard to stop eating long enough to breathe! Thanks, Audrey BG! You ROCK!

I was looking for the perfect brown sauce recipe, this is it. THANKS! I didn’t try the recipe, just the sauce for our beef and brocolli. Woot! Although I did double the cornstarch.

We love this. My sister and I made a family cookbook with all the aunts and I had to put this in as an easy, fabulous chicken recipe. Very healthy and adaptable. I add red pepper for a little kick, but otherwise I don’t change a thing from the basic recipe. Great way to empty that vegetable drawer!

This recipes sure tastes like those served in the chinese restaurants. For the chicken, they were cut into strips. As for the garlic, there weren’t any since I ran out of it. And for the vegetables, I used carrots and green peppers. The recipe’s just so delicious that even my picky husband volunteered to say that this is a five star recipe. We had this with fried rice. Yummy! This is definitely a keeper! Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful recipe

Very good! Here’s my variations: I sliced the chicken breast up into ‘planks’ for easier serving and added a few drops of sesame oil to the oil I browned them in. I microwaved sliced carrots, frozen broccoli and frozen peas for a few minutes then added them into the sauce with the chicken while it was simmering to finish cooking. I also added a little bit of fresh grated ginger and a few thinly sliced onions. We all liked it and I will be making this again. Thanks!!
